Charging an Apple Pencil: Which Charging Adapter Do You Need?

An Apple Pencil running out of battery at the wrong moment is frustrating, especially when you’re relying on it in the middle of a class, meeting, or drawing session. How you charge your stylus depends on the model. Some generations charge automatically, while others require an extra accessory to make charging easier and safer.

In our charging and adapters collection, you’ll find an adapter that lets you easily connect the Apple Pencil (1st generation) to a Lightning cable. This collection is part of the broader Stylus accessories category, where you’ll also find protection and cases and parts and replacements.

Why a charging adapter for your stylus is useful

Not every Apple Pencil charges the same way, and not every method is equally practical in every situation. A charging adapter lets you charge your stylus using a separate cable instead of connecting it directly to your iPad. This can be useful, for example, when:

  • your iPad is in a case or stand that makes a direct connection difficult;
  • you want to charge your stylus using a wall outlet or power bank instead of your iPad;
  • you’d rather not have your stylus sticking out of your iPad while it charges;
  • you’re on the go with just one cable and want to use it for multiple devices.

How do you charge your Apple Pencil?

The charging method depends entirely on your model.

  • Apple Pencil (1st generation): charges via a Lightning connector, either directly through your iPad’s Lightning port or using an adapter and Lightning cable.
  • Apple Pencil 2: charges magnetically and wirelessly when attached to the side of a compatible iPad. No cable or adapter is needed.
  • Apple Pencil Pro: charges in the same magnetic way as Apple Pencil 2, also without a cable.

In short: only with the Apple Pencil (1st generation) do you need to consider whether you need an adapter. Apple Pencil 2 and Pro always charge wirelessly.

Why charging directly isn’t always ideal

You can plug the Apple Pencil (1st generation) directly into your iPad’s Lightning port to charge it. This works, but the stylus sticks out quite far from your iPad. If you accidentally bump into it, for example while carrying it or when your iPad is packed among other items, you risk damaging both the stylus and your iPad’s Lightning port.

What’s more, if your iPad has a case, screen protector, or thicker edge, the Apple Pencil may not fit properly in the port. An adapter and cable prevent these kinds of problems, since the stylus can lie separately from your iPad while charging.

Lightning to Apple Pencil adapter

The Apple Pencil (1st generation) has a male Lightning connector under its cap, the same type of plug found at the end of a standard Lightning cable. This means you can plug the stylus directly into the female Lightning port on your iPad, but you can’t simply connect it to a separate Lightning cable: two male plugs won’t fit together.

The Lightning to Apple Pencil adapter solves this problem by converting your Apple Pencil’s male connector into a female port. This lets you connect a standard Lightning cable and charge your stylus using a wall outlet, power bank, or laptop, without the Pencil sticking directly out of your iPad.

The adapter is compact and lightweight, so it fits easily in a storage case, pouch, or bag. That way, you’ll always have it on hand when your stylus is running low on battery.

When do you need this adapter?

This adapter is especially useful if you’d rather not charge directly from your iPad, or if your stylus often runs out of battery when your iPad isn’t readily available. For example, you can charge it using a separate wall charger, a power bank, or a cable you’re already using for another device.

Have an Apple Pencil 2 or Pro? You don’t need this adapter, because these models charge magnetically and wirelessly on the side of your iPad.

Which Apple Pencil do you have?

Before buying a charging adapter, it’s important to know which model you have.

  • Apple Pencil (1st generation): round design, charges via Lightning. The adapter is compatible with this model.
  • Apple Pencil 2: flat side, charges magnetically and wirelessly. No adapter needed.
  • Apple Pencil Pro: similar to Apple Pencil 2, also charges magnetically. No adapter needed.

Tips for longer battery life

Along with using the right charging method, it also helps to follow a few general battery tips. Avoid exposing your stylus to extreme heat or cold while charging, for example, in a car in direct sunlight. You don’t need to let your stylus run completely flat before recharging it; topping it up in between is generally fine for most modern batteries.

If you use your stylus regularly, it’s a good idea to charge it when you notice the battery level getting low, rather than waiting until it runs out completely just when you need it.

Charging on the go, at school, or at work

Taking your stylus to school, work, or on the go? It’s handy not to depend on having exactly the right port on your iPad. With an adapter and a standard Lightning cable, you can charge it using almost any wall charger or power bank you already have with you.

Keep the adapter with your stylus in a storage case, so you don’t have to search for it separately when your stylus runs out of battery.

What should you look for when choosing?

Whether you need an adapter depends entirely on your Apple Pencil model and how you prefer to charge it.

When choosing, consider:

  • which Apple Pencil generation you have (only the 1st generation uses an adapter);
  • whether you’d rather charge directly from your iPad or use a separate cable;
  • whether your iPad has a case that makes direct charging difficult;
  • whether you want to be able to use the adapter on the go;
  • whether the iPads, cables, or other devices shown are included or not.

Is this accessory right for you?

Have an Apple Pencil (1st generation) and would rather not charge it directly from your iPad? The Lightning to Apple Pencil adapter is a useful addition. Have an Apple Pencil 2 or Pro? You don’t need this accessory, as these models charge wirelessly.

Frequently asked questions about charging and adapters

Do I need an adapter to charge my Apple Pencil?

Only if you have an Apple Pencil (1st generation) and would rather not charge it directly from your iPad. Apple Pencil 2 and Pro always charge wirelessly and don’t need an adapter.

Can I charge my Apple Pencil without an adapter?

Yes, the Apple Pencil (1st generation) can be plugged directly into your iPad’s Lightning port. An adapter is a convenient alternative, not a necessity.

Why isn’t charging directly always convenient?

Because the stylus sticks out quite far from your iPad, increasing the risk of damage if it gets bumped. It may also not fit properly if your iPad has a case.

Can I use the adapter with any Lightning cable?

Yes, the adapter has a female Lightning port, so you can connect a standard (male) Lightning cable to it.

Why can’t I connect a cable directly to my Apple Pencil?

Because the Apple Pencil (1st generation) has a male connector, just like the plug on a Lightning cable. Two male plugs won’t fit together, which is why you need the adapter.

How do Apple Pencil 2 and Pro charge?

These models charge magnetically and wirelessly when attached to the side of a compatible iPad. No cable or adapter is needed.

When should I get in touch?

Get in touch if you’re unsure which stylus model you have or how best to charge it. We can help you find the option that works best for you.
