Ventieldoppen kiezen: welke ventieldop past op jouw fiets, auto of e-bike? - Ibley

Valve caps are small components, but they play a practical role in protecting your valve. They help keep out dirt, dust and moisture, and ensure your valve stays covered during everyday use.

In our valve cap collection, you’ll find caps for different valve types, including Schrader/automotive valves, Presta/French valves and Dutch/Dunlop valves. The collection is part of Cycling & Outdoors, where you’ll also find other practical accessories for cycling, use on the go and maintenance.

What is a valve cap?

A valve cap is a small cap that screws onto the end of a valve. It covers the outside of the valve and protects it from dirt, sand, dust and moisture.

Valve caps are used on city bikes, electric bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes, children’s bikes, scooters and cars, among other things. The type of valve cap you need depends on your valve type.

Why are valve caps useful?

A valve cap won’t stop your tyre from going flat if the valve itself is faulty, but it does help keep the valve clean and protected. This is particularly useful for bikes left outdoors or regularly ridden in rain, sand or mud.

Valve caps are useful for:

  • protecting against dirt and dust;
  • protecting against moisture and splashes;
  • neatly finishing off the valve;
  • everyday use on a bike, car or e-bike;
  • replacing lost or damaged valve caps;
  • keeping spares for several bikes at home.

What types of valves are there?

Not every valve cap fits every valve. That’s why it’s important to check which type of valve you have first. The most common types are Schrader/automotive, Presta/French and Dutch/Dunlop valves.

  • Schrader/automotive valve: a wider valve that you’ll recognise from car tyres, but which is also found on some bikes, e-bikes, scooters and mountain bikes.
  • Presta/French valve: a narrow valve often used on road bikes, sports bikes and some mountain bikes.
  • Dutch/Dunlop valve: commonly found on city bikes, children’s bikes and classic bikes.

Valve caps for Schrader/automotive valves

Schrader valves are also known as automotive valves. You’ll find them on cars, as well as on some electric bikes, mountain bikes, scooters and other tyres. Since this valve is wider than a French valve, you’ll need a valve cap that fits it.

Our collection includes, for example, 4 valve caps suitable for Schrader/automotive valves and a larger set of 20 valve caps suitable for Schrader/automotive valves. These are useful if you want to fit caps to several bikes, vehicles or spare parts.

Valve caps for Dutch/Dunlop valves

The Dutch valve, also known as the Dunlop valve, is common on city bikes, children’s bikes and older bike models. This valve type has a different shape from Schrader and Presta valves, so it also requires compatible valve caps.

Do you ride a city bike or a children’s bike? There’s a good chance it has a Dutch/Dunlop valve. If so, you can choose 4 bike valve caps suitable for Dutch/Dunlop valves or a larger set of 20 bike valve caps suitable for Dutch/Dunlop valves.

Valve caps for Presta/French valves

Presta valves, also known as French valves, are narrow and often used on road bikes, sports bikes and some mountain bikes. Because the connection is narrower, standard caps for automotive valves won’t fit them properly.

For this valve type, our collection includes 4 bike valve caps suitable for Presta/French valves and 20 bike valve caps suitable for Presta/French valves.

Valve caps for electric bikes

Electric bikes are often used every day and regularly left outdoors. As a result, their valves are exposed to rain, dirt and dust. Valve caps are a simple way to keep the valve better protected.

Make sure you check the valve type on your e-bike. Some electric bikes use Schrader/automotive valves, while others have Dutch/Dunlop or Presta/French valves. If you also need help inflating your tyres with different pumps, take a look at our valve adapters.

Valve caps for city bikes, road bikes and mountain bikes

The type of valve cap you need depends largely on the type of bike. City bikes often have Dutch/Dunlop valves. Road bikes usually use Presta/French valves. Depending on the model and wheelset, mountain bikes may use Presta or Schrader valves.

Do you have several bikes at home? It’s a good idea to check the valve type on each bike first. That way, you won’t buy a set of valve caps that doesn’t fit some of your bikes.

Valve caps for cars and scooters

Car tyres usually have Schrader/automotive valves. Scooters and some other tyres use this type of valve too. You’ll need valve caps suitable for Schrader valves.

Do you use valve caps for both a bike and a car? Check that both have the same type of valve. Cars usually use Schrader/automotive valves, while bikes may have different types.

Set of 4 or set of 20 valve caps?

A set of 4 valve caps is useful if you want to fit new caps to one bike, car or a small number of valves. A set of 20 is more practical if you have several bikes, often lose caps or want to keep spares on hand.

A larger set can be useful for families, workshops, bike storage facilities or anyone with several bikes. For one bike or car, a smaller set is usually enough.

Plastic valve caps

Many valve caps are made of plastic. Plastic is lightweight, easy to use and suitable for everyday use. It doesn’t rust, making it a practical choice for bikes left outdoors.

Always check that the cap fits the valve properly. A cap that’s too loose can come off, while the wrong cap won’t fit securely.

Black valve caps

Black valve caps are a neutral choice that goes with almost any bike, car or e-bike. They’re discreet and give the valve a neat finish.

Our current valve cap collection includes black options for different valve types. This makes it easy to choose the right cap without having to worry about colour.

Valve caps and valve adapters: what’s the difference?

A valve cap and a valve adapter are not the same thing. A valve cap protects the valve. A valve adapter makes a pump compatible with a different valve type.

Want to protect your valve from dirt and moisture? You’re looking for valve caps. Doesn’t your pump fit your valve? You probably need a valve adapter.

When should you replace valve caps?

Valve caps can get lost, damaged or worn out. They may also become loose over time. Replace them if they no longer close properly, are cracked or are missing.

It’s useful to keep a few extra valve caps on hand, especially if you use several bikes or regularly inflate tyres.

What should you consider when choosing?

The right valve cap is primarily determined by the type of valve. So don’t just look at the colour or number of caps—check the fitting first.

When choosing, consider:

  • whether you have a Schrader/automotive, Presta/French or Dutch/Dunlop valve;
  • whether you need caps for a bike, car, e-bike, scooter or other tyres;
  • how many valve caps you need;
  • whether you want to keep spares on hand;
  • whether the material is suitable for everyday use;
  • whether the cap fits the valve properly;
  • whether any bikes, pumps or accessories shown are included or not.

Useful if you have several bikes at home

Do you have several bikes at home? It’s a good idea to check whether they all have the same type of valve. City bikes, children’s bikes, electric bikes, road bikes and mountain bikes may all use different valves.

A larger set of valve caps can be useful, but only if you choose the right type. If you use different valve types, it’s best to choose the right caps for each one.

Valve caps for when you’re on the go

Valve caps are small and lightweight, so it’s easy to carry a few spares in a saddle bag, tool kit, bike bag or car. This is particularly useful if you go on longer bike rides or regularly inflate tyres while out and about.

Do you often go cycling, camping or travelling? Along with valve caps, take a look at the wider Cycling & Outdoors collection for other practical accessories.
