Choosing an SD or microSD card reader: which one is right for your device?
A good card reader makes it easy to access photos, videos and files from an SD or microSD card on your smartphone, tablet or laptop. Especially now that many modern devices no longer have a built-in card reader, a separate card reader is often the quickest and easiest solution.
In our card reader collection, you’ll find various models for iPhone, iPad, Android, MacBook, Windows laptops and other USB-C or USB-A devices. These include compact 2-in-1 models, 3-in-1 options and card readers with additional USB functionality.
What is a card reader?
A card reader is an accessory that lets you read a memory card on another device. You insert an SD card or microSD card into the card reader and then connect it to your phone, tablet, laptop or computer.
This is useful when you want to transfer files from a camera, dash cam, drone, security camera, action camera or another device that uses memory cards.
When do you need a card reader?
A card reader is especially useful when your device doesn’t have a built-in SD or microSD slot. This is often the case these days with iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, many Android phones and modern laptops.
You can use a card reader, for example, to:
- transfer photos from a camera to your phone or laptop;
- view videos from a dash cam or drone;
- open files from an SD or microSD card;
- back up photos and documents;
- quickly clear memory cards while travelling or on holiday.
What is the difference between SD and microSD?
SD cards are larger and are often used in cameras, video cameras and some larger devices. MicroSD cards are smaller and are commonly found in drones, action cameras, dash cams, security cameras and some Android devices.
Do you use both types of card? Then a card reader for both SD and microSD is usually the most convenient choice. Our collection includes several models that support both card types.
Which connection do you need?
When choosing a card reader, the connection is just as important as the type of memory card. After all, not every card reader works with every device.
The most common connections in our collection are:
- Lightning for older iPhones and iPads;
- USB-C for newer iPhones, iPads, Android devices, MacBooks and laptops;
- USB-A for many Windows laptops, desktops and other traditional USB devices.

Card reader for iPhone and iPad
Use an iPhone or iPad? Then it’s important to first check which connection your device has. Older models use Lightning, while newer models increasingly use USB-C.
Lightning card readers are popular with Apple users, such as the Ibley Pro 2-in-1 Lightning card reader for iPhone and iPad. Looking for more flexibility? A model with multiple connection options may also be useful, such as the Ibley Plus 3-in-1 card reader with USB-C and Lightning adapter.
Card reader for USB-C devices
More and more devices use USB-C. These include Android smartphones, iPhone 15 models and newer, newer iPads, MacBooks, Chromebooks and many modern laptops.
A USB-C card reader is often the most logical choice for these devices. It’s compact, quick to connect and convenient for everyday use. Our collection includes simple USB-C models as well as more advanced options with an extra USB 3.0 port or multiple functions.
Card reader for laptop or computer
Do you mainly use a Windows laptop, desktop or another computer? Then it’s a good idea to check whether your device has USB-A, USB-C or both. Some card readers only work with one connection, while others are more versatile.
A card reader with both USB-C and USB-A, for example, can be useful if you want to use it with multiple devices. That’s handy at home, at work or on the go.
2-in-1, 3-in-1 or card reader with extra USB ports?
Not all card readers are the same. Some models do exactly what you need: read SD and microSD cards. Others offer more, combining several functions in one accessory.
Generally speaking, you can choose from:
- 2-in-1 card readers for SD and microSD;
- 3-in-1 card readers with extra ports or additional connection options;
- card readers with USB hub functionality for connecting other USB devices as well.
So if you want more than just a memory card reader and value extra flexibility, a more advanced card reader may be a better fit than a basic model.
What do you use a card reader for?
Card readers are often bought for very practical situations. For example, you might want to quickly transfer holiday photos from your camera to your iPad, save dash cam footage or view drone footage without first needing a full computer setup.
Card readers are also useful for creatives, photographers, students and business users. They give you quick access to files and make it easier to work with devices that don’t have a card slot of their own.
Card reader for camera, dash cam or drone
Do you use a camera, dash cam or drone? Then you’ll often be working with SD or microSD cards. A good card reader makes it easier to quickly view, save or transfer footage.
For cameras, SD support is often important. For drones and dash cams, microSD is usually more important. Use both? Choose a model that supports both card types.
Plug & play: what does it mean?
Many card readers are plug & play. This means that, in most cases, you can connect and use them straight away, without complicated installation or additional software. This makes them especially convenient for everyday use.
However, it’s still a good idea to check that your device and operating system support the function you need. The user experience can vary, especially with Apple devices, mobile devices and specific apps.
What should you look for when choosing?
The best card reader depends on your device and how you plan to use it. So don’t choose based only on price or appearance; focus primarily on the connection, compatibility and features.
When choosing, consider:
- whether you want to use SD, microSD or both;
- which connection your device has: Lightning, USB-C or USB-A;
- whether you want to use the card reader with one device or several;
- whether you only want to read cards or also need extra USB functionality;
- whether you’re looking for a compact model for travel or a more advanced model for home or work;
- whether your device supports plug & play use with card readers.
Card reader for Apple or universal use?
Our collection includes both card readers designed specifically for Apple devices and more universal models. Apple users often choose Lightning or USB-C models that work well with iPhone and iPad. Universal models are useful if you also want to use the card reader with other devices.

Combine a card reader with extra connections
Sometimes a standard card reader is all you need. In other cases, it’s useful if the same accessory also offers extra connection options, such as USB 3.0 or support for multiple connection types.
